In a Timeless Story / En Tidlös Berättelse
In a Timeless Story is a picture book presented both in physical form and as an immersive VR experience – where the reader is allowed to step into the world of the book and experience the reading on the spot.
In a Timeless Storis based on the knowledge and life experiences of both Laila Spik, who comes from a reindeer herding family in Sirkas’ Sami village in Jokkmokk, Sápmi, and Mikael (Micklo) Jarrett, who belongs to the Baga-Baga clan and speaks the Gumbaynggirr language,
which is spoken on the mid-north coast of New South Wales, Australia.
In a Timeless Story tells us about nature, about our relationship to the Earth and the knowledge that is passed on from generation to generation to keep traditions and cultures alive.
The project has been led by Ishtar Bäcklund Dakhil who, among other things, illustrated, did the graphic design and wrote the text together with Marie Metso. The immersive VR experience has been built by Vincent Wong, and the music is composed by Philip Olofsson. The book and VR experience were exhibited at Ájtte, the Swedish Mountain and Sami Museum, and at Bellingen State Library in Bellingen, NSW, Australia, 2023.
